About this deal

Eventually, Nakamura is able to build his confidence and grow closer to Hirose, with the series concluding with the two boys developing a reciprocal friendship. Finding really cute BL manga that doesn’t fall into harmful story tropes is pretty rare, so I consider this a win. This volume ended with them being real friends, which was definitely a step up for someone as timid as Nakamura.

Nakamura himself is a yaoi fan boy and initially uses BL manga as a reference for how he can approach Hirose, up until his teacher finds a volume of his BL manga and laughs about how unrealistic it is. Floral Motifs: Like any decent love interest, Hirose is often accompanied by flowers in the background when he shows up. Nakamura is a shy boy who falls in love at first sight with another boy--his dreamy high school classmate Hirose.Big Damn Heroes: At one point, Hirose is accosted by Japanese Delinquents that want to strip him and take pictures. Daydream Surprise / Imagine Spot: Nakamura has a tendency to dream away, envisioning scenarios featuring him and Hirose, but reality never waits long to pull him back. If you don’t have a thick stomach and don’t want the positive connection you made with this book ruined for you, you probably shouldn’t read the sequel. A Day in the Limelight: Chapter 5 is told from Kawamura's perspective and mostly serves to develop her and her friends. It's important to note that King in Limbo was originally published in 2017, before the COVID-19 pandemic, making this feel just a teensy bit prescient. The series also began running at the same time as Syundei's horror manga series Total Eclipse of the Eternal Heart. School Play: The set-up for Chapter 6; naturally, both Nakamura and Hirose, who makes for a very convincing girl, end up performing in the play. When playing the role of Hirosenne in Tamura's play "The Night of Falling Stars," Hirose cross-dresses as a girl, having longer brown hair, a long white dress with long black socks underneath. In Chapter 11, Hirose vents to Nakamura, saying that he's the first person to listen to Hirose venting, indicating that Hirose somewhat trusts Nakamura enough to express his feelings in front of Nakamura.

If the “wholesome” medal is meant to protect younger readers, then be extremely careful with what you choose to bestow it upon. I am fine with reading about morally questionable topics as long as they are treated with sensitivity; there are shown to be consequences for the negative actions (and the author shows awareness that it was messed up); and/or the execution is thought-provoking or interesting. This manga isn't about romance, it's about the fact that even a loser like Nakamura doesn't have to be alone.

Just when it looks like they're about to share a kiss, Nakamura wakes up, and finds not Hirose's lips on his, but his pet octopus tightly suctioned onto his face. Nakamura, a shy gay teenage boy harbors a crush on Hirose Aiki when he first entered high school, despite never having any interaction with him. Unfortunately, Nakamura is also woefully awkward and prone to extreme blushing fits, so it's not always smooth sailing. It's not very fun to look at and good writing or entertaining characters are often sacrificed in the name of fan-service.
